Illum Wikkelsø

Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999) was a Danish cabinetmaker and designer. He studied at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts with contemporaries such as Hans Wegner. Upon graduation, he worked for cabinet maker Jacob Kjaer. Later he went to work for the firm of Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard-Nielson. He opened his own design studio at a two-century old farm near Århus in 1954.

Wikkelsø believed that furniture should be solid and durable but should also delight the eye while embracing the body. His work is characterized by simplicity but often has surprise elements.

Wikkelsø designed for several of Denmark's finest furniture makers, such as C.F. Christensen, N. Eilersen, Holger Christiansen, Komfort/Dansk Form, Søren Willadsen Møbelfabrik, Hjørring Møbelfabrik. His designs received a number of prestigious awards.

  1. That's a great looking rocker, but it looks as if it could give you one heck of a kidney jab. Have to be careful with that one.

    1. You have a point there. I'm not sure that would be a good chair to have out at a party if alcohol were going to be served. :)

    1. Yes, most did seem to start with someone established right out of college and then later open their own studios.

  3. What style. Not sure about picking out furniture but if I ever have to name a kid again I am going to look through your lists of designers for a real doozy! How cool would it be to be called Illum Jones?

    1. What a coincidence...I was just thinking this morning that my daughter and SIL should have picked famous designer names for Grandsons #1 and #2. Illum Jones kinda puts me in mind of Illya Kuryakin...only easier to spell. :)

  6. My company currently works with the Wikksloe family, and we manufacture the famous V11 sofa and easy chair and we are just about to re luanch WIkkelsoe's ML90 sofa. His work was stunning, Wikkelsoe had a great sense of balance and proportions, along with a perfectionist according to his family.
