From the ridiculous to the sublime

At the front left is the tiny box used by the careless seller of the salt and pepper shakers. Behind it is the huge box and the two smaller ones...yes, three of them...that the seller of the samovar used, along with more than ample peanuts and bubble wrap. Granted, the salt and pepper set is much smaller than the samovar, but it was clearly too large to ship in that tiny box, as the sad picture in an earlier post proved. On the other hand, the seller of the samovar promised to be ultra-cautious and was.

So, yes, the samovar is here, and after holding my breath till I was sure it arrived safely, I placed it in the preeminent, first-thing-you-see position atop the cabinet that contains the rest of the Iroquois Harvest Time by Ben Seibel and the granite gray Steubenville American Modern by Russel Wright. And if you look behind the glass, you'll see the recently repaired salt shaker, a reminder that these lovely pieces of history are too precious to take for granted.

The beginnings of my collection of Harvest Time and American Modern in granite gray.
I think a larger cabinet may be in order very soon.

  1. WHEW!! I have been waiting with toes and fingers crossed to hear your samovar made it safely. It's lovely sitting there in all of it's glory. Your Harvest Time and American Modern look lovely and like they justly belong together. I applaud you for putting your shaker back together and proudly displaying it alongside it's relatives. Can't wait to see future additions to this collection and your new (vintage) cabinet home for it.

  2. @Krazy4Mod: The package actually arrived last Friday, but I wasn't at home to sign for it when the mailman came. I was headed to get it Saturday, and my daughter called to say the pediatrician's on-call nurse wanted her to take my month-old grandson to the ER (just as a precaution, all better now), so I had to wait till Monday. I was on pins and needles.

  4. Is it out of reach to little grandson hands? It is really beautiful. I love that you have such a substantial collection going already.

  7. Thanks for all the nice comments. I'm relieved that it's here and thrilled that it looks even better in person than it did in pictures.

@Midcenturymadam: I have baby gates to keep the older grandson out of the kitchen and dining room now. Too many things he doesn't need to get into in both places. However, I really think I'll need to get a larger cabinet that will enclose all the pieces, because when both grandsons are older, they could careen a Big Wheel into it...or be wrestling and bump into it. Ah, wonderful rowdy boys...LOL

  8. Dana, they are stunning! Yay they made it safely! Love that little display cabinet too. I'd love one of those.

  9. @Rhan Vintage: It's really a little bookcase that a friend gave me, so it's a tad on the small side for dishes. It worked well as a bar, but I think I'm going to have to look for something larger and put this baby in the store.

  10. Glad your samovar made it safely. I will totally admit to once having poorly packed some glassware I sold on eBay. Such a rookie mistake!

  11. @monogirl: We all make mistakes of one kind or another when we first start selling, and I was probably way too hard on the seller of the salt and pepper set. After several days, she did finally email me back and kinda halfheartedly offer a $7 refund, but shipping it back at my own expense was going to be more trouble than it was worth. Anyway, by that time the salt shaker was repaired and in my cabinet. And, after all, $7 wouldn't have made up for my disappointment or the loss of something that old.

I definitely breathed a sigh of relief when the samovar arrived safely though.
