My Blue Heaven

When whippoorwills call
 And evening is nigh
I hurry to my Blue Heaven

So started a popular song of my childhood, but that's not the "Blue Heaven" I'm talking about in this post...although I definitely hurried to the phone when I saw on Craigslist that the seller I bought my Harvest Time from was selling her entire collection of mid-century china.

I picked up about thirty pieces of Royal China in the Blue Heaven pattern. The seller generously tossed in a few random pieces of Russel Wright, just for good measure, so I wasn't bothered that the box of dishes, long on saucers and devoid of plates altogether, didn't resemble what anyone would call a "set." I was still happy with my find.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to call it mine for long, as much as I like it. This is destined for our store. ("The Store" plot is really starting to thicken. Stay tuned.)

  1. Oh yeah, I loves me some Blue Heaven! I've got a sizable set myself that I'll have to drag out and share with the world! I've even got (and spotted another a the antique mall last weekend) a dinner plate with the entire 1965 calendar printed in the center! I think this was the second pattern I started collecting. I've got some glassbake (or whoever made it) pieces like Creme Brulee Ramekins (or custard dishes if you lean that way)!

  2. So cute! I bet there is someone out there, searching for these pieces to complete their set. You'll make someone very happy. So excited to hear more store news . . .

  4. @Sudha: You would have really said wow if you had seen all the china that woman had for sale. She must have had partial collections of every really popular line of china from the 50s and 60s.

  5. @Mr.M: That's hilarious about the dinner plate with the calendar in the middle. I wonder what kind of promotional piece that was.

  6. @Tanya: I'm hoping we'll be able to make our official announcement of location and opening date by the end of this week. Just a little more paperwork to go...

  8. I like the new banner, too! Congratulations on your new venture. I'm sure it will be a success; you have fantastic taste.
I love the Blue Heaven and thought about collecting it; especially since it comes in Fire King and the idea of having both is appealing to the hoarder in me... But I realized that the 8 glasses I have in Blue Heaven never get used because they are pristine and I'm terrified that they will get ruined... Great find though! I bet it was fun to look at her collection. What is about saucers though? I seem to always find partial sets of china at thrift stores that are short on dinner plates but have a zillion saucers. I guess it's just a usage thing...

  9. @adriane: Thanks! At first it felt like I was posting on someone else's blog, but I'm used to it now. :) I don't know for sure what it is with saucers either, but I'm betting you're right about usage. Thinking back over all the years I've had sets of china, I can't remember many times I used the saucers.
