Oh, Milo...

Last night my SIL picked up a fabulous chrome and glass etagere that might be a Milo Baughman design for Thayer Coggin. It's a massive piece, standing well over 6' tall and almost 4' wide and is in beautiful condition, needing only a little cleaning up to be absolutely stunning.

I need to research the piece thoroughly before we put a price tag on it, but someone will eventually get a very dramatic wall unit or room divider that they'll love.

Update 8/10/11: We contacted Thayer Coggin, and this turned out NOT to be a Milo Baughman etagere. We now know you can tell by the legs/base that it's not. However, just a few weeks later, we did get an authentic Baughman etagere. Both pieces have subsequently sold.

  1. Oh Me, Oh Milo - that is magnificent!! I can just invision those glass shelves filled with all kinds of beautiful pieces. By the way, I've been spring breaking with my little great niece and haven't had time to keep up with your blog. The store is just awesome!! How I wish I could just stop in on a regular basis and of course leave with treasures.

  7. Gorgeous! I have what appears to be a Milo Baughman by Green media cabinet (phonograph, of course). Is there a logo or something I can look for?

  8. @Barbara: I wish I could tell you! Our etagere is unmarked, so I've contacted Thayer Coggin to see if they can help me identify it. Why don't you do a post about your cabinet, and maybe someone will know exactly what it is and provide you some documentation. I'd love to see it!

  11. I've determined what this piece isn't. Now I just have to figure out what it is. Try as I might, I couldn't find a picture online of a Milo Baughman with legs like this one, so I contacted Thayer Coggin, and they confirmed that they didn't make it. We didn't pay a designer price for it, so we're not upset. It's still a heavy, high-quality vintage piece that someone will want. I found two identical etageres online. One was incorrectly identified as a real Baughman and priced at $3400; the other was being sold for $750 as an "in the style of." I'll keep researching now till I figure out who made the piece and when.

  12. @LostWorldofBrian: Now you're making me cry. $20???? It'll be a miracle if you don't get arrested, because that was a steal.

  13. Well after the fact comment, but what SHOULD the legs look like? I have a very similar piece but can't figure out if it's the real deal either. My legs go flat along the floor and I've seen some sites like 1stDibs calling it a Milo Baughman, but then other images have the legs flat and then a raised bit on the sides. Thoughts you could offer would be appreciated!

  15. I have a brass and glass shelf unit that I found hidden away in a Seattle garage. It looks like a Milo Baughman, but is there a way to actually tell its authenticity? Any help would be much appreciated.
