The glorious glass of Dino Martens

Dino Martens (1894-1970) was born in Venice and attended the Accademia di Belle Arti. In the mid-1920s he moved to Murano and was a partner and decorator for a short time at the glass factory S.A.L.I.R. He then worked as a designer for Salvati & C. and the Successori Andrea Rioda.

In addition to design work, he was also a painter. He exhibited his work at the Biennale di Venezia between 1924 and 1930.

Upon his return from the war in 1939, he became artistic director for the glass factory Aureliano Toso. From 1946 through the early 1960s, Martens designed his best work for Toso. Although he used traditional Venetian techniques, he achieved strikingly original polychromatic effects combined with daring asymmetrical shapes.

  2. I am starting to really like glass. Well, I always liked glass (it would be a weird thing to dislike), but now I am paying attention to it more, thanks to you.

  3. @Tanya: I've always been more of a collector of ceramics than glass, but since I started writing this blog and researching glassmakers, I find myself drawn more and more to it too.
