eight six seven five three oh ni-ey-yine

If you love things mid-century like I do (or even 80s retro like the title of this post), sometimes enough innovation is enough. Don't get me wrong. I love the convenience of a cell phone, and I would be hard-pressed to do without one. I'm certain you feel the same way. But admit it. Holding a cell phone on your shoulder with your jaw just isn't as easy as propping a phone there the old-fashioned way.

Oh, I know all about earbuds and earbooms and earwraps and earloops...or whatever the manufacturers have come up with to call all the handsfree devices that are available. Sure, they work, but they simply don't have the great feel of your old pink Princess phone or your mom's yellow wall phone in
the kitchen.

Now you can have the best of both worlds.

French designer David Turpin has come up with the POP handset that attaches to your iPhone or iPad. You can buy an adapter for other mobile phones, and it even works for VOIP computer calls with a USB adapter. The POP handset looks like a classic phone with a bit of a contemporary edge, since it comes in a luxurious soft-touch texture. Hmmmmmm...does that mean it won't slide off your shoulder like the old receivers did? Now that's the kind of innovation I can live with!

  1. It's a cool Idea. I have seen a few pics of people out in public with them.
But it would take up too much room in my purse. *hehe* I will stick to having a rotary in my house.

Although it could make a good weapon if someone jumped you. =p ahahaha

  3. I WANT this. Saw it in black in a catalog and said no thanks. PINK? Yes, please. I am making my boss buy me one for the phone (I carry a cell with me everywhere with the biz phone transferred to it).

  4. I have always wanted a pink phone.
I hate cell phones (we call them mobiles here) and only use mine if I have too - I'm a bit of a fuddy-duddy I suppose...

    1. I'm so happy to find someone else who will admit to disliking cell phones. I don't use mine very often either, and the smarter they get, the more annoying I think they are.

    2. Great! I wanna get one. Thing is, I'm also a cellphone delinquent, I'm one of the last people on earth who sticks to a lo-tech, clamshell, b&w screen, cellphone. I might succumb to an iphone this summer though and when that happens, that red handset is mine!

  7. I might be getting a smart phone soon and am personally dreading it. I still have a clam shell style cell phone and like it because if your hands are full, you can still kind of lean it and press it to your ear with your shoulder without it falling to the ground.
Saw these on Fab.com and ebay and will for sure get one when I convert (ugh) to a smart phone.

    1. I have a smart phone, but I've threatened to get rid of it and go back to something simpler. I don't use a fraction of the features on the phone (not even to get directions or to check my email), and I really, really hate touch screens. I may get one of these handsets to keep in the car.

  8. I think I'll keep this post to myself and not share with the girlfriend, the house is quickly piling up with techno gadgets. Very clever though.

  9. This is too cool. I would actually use this around the house as I can never manage to charge my bluetooth and the iPhone does not do the hold between the shoulder and chin thing very well. I bet this is not classified as a "hands free device" though!
