New Eichler listing

If any of you have $985,000 lying around and want to live in San Rafael, California, here's a new Eichler listing that might interest you. The house was built in 1961, has 2085 square feet, with four bedrooms and two bathrooms. It backs up to an open space and has a salt water pool.  Inside it has a grand entryway with skylights, tile floors and updated kitchen and bathrooms.

I know some of you think that modernizing kitchens and bathrooms to this extent is a sacrilege, but as I've said before, I was alive when mid-century homes were new. I've paid my dues using a toothbrush to scrub white grout in pink bathrooms, hand-drying dishes every night because we didn't have a dishwasher and living with Formica that has been permanently stained with Kool-Aid. I love the mix of vintage and new, so I'm fine with modern conveniences as long as they're thoughtfully and tastefully done...and I think these are.

    1. But how could we get each other to leave so we could all have our turns? We'd never want to give the place up.

  3. yep my money box is in too!...the perfect retreat. Can just see myself by that pool sipping a dirty martini ( it would really be a beer but martini sounds a bit better dont you think?). we could form a mid century cult?!. xx

    1. I'll be the group's Sex and the City drinker, with a mango martini in my hand...or maybe champagne with a splash of Chambord. And once you got to know me, you'd find my alcoholic beverage preferences hilariously funny, because I'm about as far from a girly-girl type as you can get.

I think we formed the mid-century cult a while back. We're just now getting around to admitting it. :)

  4. Yes, cracking open my piggy bank as I type. But you know Dana, an equivalent home like that would be more expensive here...think I might pack my bags and move to the US, if ever a windfall came my way!! xx

    1. When you pack up, you might consider coming to Dallas, where our real estate prices are still considerably lower than California. A house of comparable design and more square footage can still be found here in the $500,000-650,000 range.

  6. Nice, wonder if they removed the interior atrium. Love those house numbers, you should add them to your new place!

    1. We have numbers similar to those on the front of the main house.

Did all Eichlers have an interior atrium, or did some have atrium-like entryways like that one? I really don't know.

    2. Some of the early ones did not have atriums as your earlier post noted. Looks like a small step down near the entry with skylights.

    3. Guess I should have read my old post. I'd forgotten that. :)

  7. That home is amazing, love the work they did! There are several on the market right now nearby. Think I've mentioned my husband grew up in this area in an Eichler (with 8 kids!). It's interesting to drive around and see some of the amazing remodels. Some have not been touched - or have been mangled with - and go on the market usually needing a lot of work. Like this one in foreclosure http://www.fhallen.com/property-detail/46760/724-Appleberry-Dr,San-Rafael,CA,94903
    (a bargain at $559,000 :)

    1. It must set your teeth on edge to see the mangled ones. The kitchen/dining room shots of the one you showed us almost brought tears to my eyes. That wallpaper! That light fixture! Yikes.

  8. If only I had that kind of money, I'd be moving in now. Haha! The entryway had me sold. The open layout benefited from the skylight and made the area look even bigger. And I love how it spotlights the huge artwork beneath it!
