I grew up with Formica counter tops. It was one of those items that I never paid much attention to until I first used it. Such amazing stuff. It is one of the most durable tops for on just about anything. I even covered speaker enclosures with it so they would not get or look beat up from being on the road. ( regular vinyl and other covering can be damaged easily and large speakers can easily show handling abuse, Formica kind of goes against common coverings, but it will make things much more durable)

I'd rather have a Formica counter top than granite. Granite looks nice, but is easily scratched. Formica looks nice and it is harder to scratch. So many people here have replaced Formica tops with granite and many share my thoughts; granite is nice to look at and Formica is nice to use.
I think you're right. I used quartz when I built last year, and I could kick myself for not looking at all the beautiful choices of Formica. If I had it to do over, that's the way I'd go.
