Charlotte Perriand design

To promote their Icones collection at last month's Design Miami, Louis Vuitton built a holiday house designed by Charlotte Perriand behind the South Beach Raleigh Hotel. La Maison au Bord de l'Eau (House by the Water) was one of Perriand's previously unbuilt projects.

The pre-fabricated Modernist design won second prize in a competition conducted by L'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui in 1934. It is a 1076 square foot (100 square meter) two-bedroom home with a fully fitted kitchen, sliding doors, aluminum walls and a sailcloth-covered deck.

Perriand's daughter Pernette has described her mother's enthusiasm for small living spaces, explaining that she believed in eliminating the unnecessary and emphasizing the flow of light and air throughout her designs.

  1. Wow! What a forward-thinking design! I daresay it looks better than most of what is being produced today.

  3. The more I see homes designed with the outdoor area central to living, the more I like it!
