Jasba Keramikfabriken was founded in 1926 by Jakob Schwaderlapp, the same man who founded Ceramano in 1959. The company name was derived from the letters
Ja of the founder's first name, the letter
S at the beginning of his last name, and the first two letters of the name of the town in which the factory was located,
Baumbach.
Popular early lines included
Cortina and
Jaspatina, and the major designers were Cilli Wörsdörfer in the 1950s and Christiane Reuter in the 1960s. Wörsdörfer tended to produce pieces in matte glazes and somewhat sedate colors. Around the time Reuter took over as designer in 1960, Jasba started a line called
Bunte Welt der Keramik (
Colorful World of Ceramics), which featured brightly colored shiny glazes.
Jasba pieces were usually produced in off-white clay. Markings usually included the words West-Germany, either raised or impressed, within a rectangle. If the company name was present, it was generally found within an oval. Paper labels and metal foil labels were sometimes used, and occasionally wax labels can be found intact.
Jasba ceased production of art pottery in the 1970s, but the company is still in business today, primarily involved in the manufacture of tile.

Wow that face vase is amazing...would never have picked it as WGerman. Love the Cortina glaze on Jasba pieces too.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have thought it to be WG either, but the site from which the picture came is written by a pottery collector, and she listed the N-series number for the piece. I'm on the fence about the Cortina. I know it's been very popular for a long time and that several companies have copied it, but every time I look at it, it reminds me of a human brain, which is a little off-putting.
