Christmas excess

"Less is more" may be an appropriate modernist maxim for most of the year, but during the holidays, not so much...not around our house anyway.

Yesterday my SIL and the boys decorated the front of the house, creating a riot of lights and Christmas trees. They decided to get a real tree this year, so their artificial one, with tons of decorations and lights so bright they can probably be seen from space, went up outdoors. And who wants just one tree when you can have two? A 5' tinsel tree with shimmery multicolored dots (and tilting only slightly to the right) found its way to the front porch, while every inch of shrubbery...as well as the ceiling of the porch...was draped in Grandson #2's favorite "rainbow lights." They even added a jiggly carrot-nosed yard sign that says, "Let It Snow," since we're still having daytime weather in the 60s.

Let the Happy Glitterdays of December begin!

    1. Kylie, I'll pass your compliment along to the grandsons. They always love getting a mention in the blog...such hams! Who knew that one big fellow and two littles could create such a holiday wonderland? :)

    2. The more I look at it, that tree looks positively radioactive! haha

    1. Sudha, it's always so much fun to drive up to the house at night and see all the lights shining. I can't help but smile. Of course, that tree is so bright that I can see it from blocks away! :)

  3. I think it's so sweet the way your grandsons are so excited to decorate and have their own ideas about what looks best! :) I love a 'family' decor look!

    1. I'm really getting a kick out of seeing them take such an active role in decorating this year. After my daughter grew up, I enjoyed my fancy-schmanzy color coordinated decorating, but this year I recalled that in the 1950s and 60s my maternal grandmother would have all blue ornaments on white trees or some such, and I always preferred our "rainbow tree" at home. I guess my grandsons come by it honestly. :)

    1. Their dad still loves to decorate for the holidays (only house on the block decorated for Halloween right here), so I doubt that they will. In fact, Joe's dad was the Clark Griswold of the neighborhood when Joe was a kid, so I think it's genetic. :)

  5. The thing I like best about the first photo is that there was a toasty fire blazing in the fireplace, and you can see it reflected inside the chimney cap.

    1. Thanks, Ton. No one driving down the street will miss it, that's for sure!

  7. Surely, if the astronauts can see your house from the moon then Santa Claus can't miss it while gliding through Dallas on his sleigh. And who knows he might even leave some snow for you. Have a fun Holiday season. The decorating is one of the best parts and it looks like your grandsons have a head start!
