Nesting: Kitchen ideas

Just when you thought you were through reading my obsessive posts about planning and building the Modernist Nest (as my previous home was lovingly dubbed by Anita at Fun and VJs), I have embarked on the planning of Nest II.  As I did the first time around, I'm using Pinterest to organize my ideas and keep track of sources and prices, since that proved so effective before.

This time, I plan to use a combination of nickel and black fixtures and pulls with white cabinets and concrete-colored countertops. I'm still waffling between wood/laminate floors throughout the entire house or dark gray-brown tile floors in the wet areas. The current incarnation of the house plan has no upper cabinets in the kitchen, favoring instead a whole wall of shelving with doors on each end to hide unsightly items like small appliances and canned goods, while leaving a floor-to-ceiling section in the middle open to store/display vintage dishes and glassware.

I'm having even more fun planning Nest II than I did the original apartment, because I'm getting to correct the mistakes I made. For two years, I said, "If I had it to do again, the next time I'd...," and now I'm getting a chance at that do-over.

  1. Sounds like a good start! I'm excited to follow along. Just one comment on the flooring. I have a pergo-like laminate in my house and find that you have to be super careful with cleaning up wet spills. We have warping in a lot of places. So...if you go laminate choose carefully since you will have grandsons running around.

    1. You're right about having to get spills up quickly with laminate...and hardwood too. I've had one or the other ever since the boys were born, so I've already trained them to wipe up after themselves pronto! :)

  2. We just remodeled our mcm in SW fort worth and we went with white cabinets and dark grey counters. We went with Ikea white high gloss cabinets and caesarstone counters also from Ikea. They installed and did just a fabulous job. We're thrilled with the results and it was very affordable. Wish I could attach a pic. Good luck with your kitchen!

    1. I used Ikea for my first "backyard bungalow" (kitchen and bathroom) and I was so pleased with the product and the installation that I'm going to purchase cabinets from them again this time. I'm a little disappointed that they don't have the plain birch doors now that they've replaced Akurum with Sektion, but I think I'll be happy with white for a change. Your kitchen sounds fantastic. I wish Blogger let you add photos in comments like Facebook does.

  3. I sound like a McDonald's advert, sitting here singing 'I'm lovin' it' over your kitchen plans...

  4. I repeat that exact same quote about next time myself Dana ;)
I love the tiling in the second pic - I thought about doing the same in our kitchen and...guess what? Yep! I wish I did!
I feel a move coming on for us actually. I'll keep you posted x

    1. No matter how carefully you plan, I'm sure there are always things you find after you live with them a while that you wish you'd done differently. I can't wait to hear about the potential move. Definitely keep me posted!
