Making memories: Playing in the snow

We don't get a lot of snow in our part of Texas. Some years we don't get any at all.

Earlier this week, it was 80 degrees (27 C) outside, and my cactus was soaking up the sun. Within a 24-hour period, the temperature had dropped more than 50 degrees Today it looks like this at our house.

Main house decked out for Christmas

The grandsons are having a ball!

    1. We could hardly keep them in the house. All they wanted to do was play in the snow. :)

  2. Wow, this is a sight I never thought I'd see in Texas! The house looks so gorgeous and Christmasy! Oh, the grandsons are adorable, SO cute!!!! Love how the little one is sheltering himself a little behind his brother, so familiar!

    1. For those of you who live in places with lots of snow, I'm sure our excitement about ankle-deep snow is a little comical, but we only get a few days of snow each year, if any, so we have to make the most of it. You probably find it equally funny that it completely paralyzes the city, and we close schools and businesses. :)

    2. We actually don't have any snow at all yet, Dana, which is a bit unusual! Where I grew up on the southwestern coast, snow is really rare, mostly rain, and there's chaos if winter decides to pay a visit! I prefer it that way, I could easily skip winter:-)

    3. I'm not crazy about cold weather either. Because we get snow and ice so seldom, no one here knows how do drive in it, so it's a circus on the roadways, with everyone sliding and having wrecks. That's why most of us hibernate till it's over.

  3. Just enough snow to look nice. I guess you are in Southern TX? My brother used to live in the Northern part (so long ago I forget the exact place) and he got the storms in spring and snow most years in the winter, but I do not recall it being this early)

    Adorable children.

    1. I actually live in North Central Texas...our home is in Fort Worth, and the store is in Dallas. Sometimes it's warm enough for shorts on Christmas Day, and sometimes we have snow. As a general rule, we tend to have our snowy days in January or February though, although some years we get none at all. We do get our share of spring storms here, with tornadoes always a possibility.

  4. Oh my, grandsons 1 and 2 look like they're in paradise! Do they have enough snow to build a snowman?

    1. Unfortunately, it was snow mixed with ice, so it was a little too crunchy to hold together. They couldn't even make a proper snowball to pelt their dad with.

  5. So glad you took a picture of it, Dana. It's so darn pretty and so unusual for Texas. Although it seems like the last few years you guys have had more than expected. We haven't had any in about 3 years. The major drop in temps is what gets crazy. Thursday morning it was 80 degrees and by the time I got off work it was 42. Gotta love it! Enjoy the pretty snow. The grandkids are adorable!

    1. You're so right about the temperature drops. It's nuts! I honestly had moved my cactus outside to get some sun for the first few days of the week, because it was so warm, and then the next thing I knew, it was 20 degrees out there. Luckily, I didn't forget to bring them in!

    1. I wasn't much of a snow person, even as a kid. I'd go out long enough to throw a few snowballs and to gather enough snow for my mother to make snow ice cream for us, but that's about it. :)

  7. I'm usually a fan of the snow, bright, white and crisp. But could it not have arrived some other weekend?! haha We mostly got Ice which made the roads hazardous and had everyone up in arms for the pending "snowpocalypse" Tune in Friday to find out how it affected our annual Thanksmass plans!

    1. I hope the roads are clear enough for Thanksmass to go ahead as planned. Jenn and I have been virtually trapped since last Thursday. The ice was so thick on the driveway that our gate wouldn't open, so we couldn't get our cars out. Joe's truck was on the street, thank goodness, so we could at least go out for groceries. Things thawed enough this morning to dig out the gate. I heard them out there with shovels pounding on the ice to crack it. I pretended not to hear and stayed inside warm and dry. :)
