The modernist nest gets Christmasfied

I decorated for Christmas yesterday and bought several gifts, officially signalling that the holiday season has begun, so don't be surprised if a few holiday themed posts show up between now and the New Year.

Of course, the grandsons have had the spirit for weeks already, and they're ecstatic that the decorating of the main house is continuing nightly...layer by layer...and is starting to look like a genuine Clark Griswold design. My SIL has fond memories of his dad's Christmas decorating expertise, and I expect Christmases to come will see more and more elaborate additions to our front yard. When it's finally finished, I'll post photos. In the meantime, here are a few shots of my little modernist nest, holiday style.

Cactus comes back in tonight. Cold weather is due back.

Tabletop aluminum tree...There's no room for a big one!

An added touch to this year's decorations, at least till it rains again, is Grandson #1's signature on the front step, made all the more precious to Grammo that his D is backward, his E has LOTS of lines and he ran out of room for his N.

And nevermind the ever-present leaves. Even with constant leaf blowing, we can't keep them gone for more than a couple of minutes. I love our warm again/cold again Texas falls, but the downside is that it takes forever for the trees to become completely bare.

Grandson #1's contribution to the decorating

  1. Attractive decorations. I wish I still had a 3 foot (I think it was 3, maybe 4) aluminum Christmas tree I had from the 60s. They are nice reminders of the past before everything was plastic from China. Of course there are real ones that come with their own built in fire danger.

    1. Nothing was worse than having a real tree during the shag carpet era and in July stepping on a Christmas tree needle embedded in the rug. How well I remember the downside of that! :)

  2. Every time I see that orange door it makes me happy! A festive Christmas wreath makes it even better.
I'm so happy someone (meaning not me yet) is getting into the Christmas spirit. It's one of my favorite things about blogs this time of year -- is when you share your Christmas decor and traditions. SO FUN!

OMG, Dana... the leaves... the leaves drive me crazy. Richie blew and mowed this past weekend and it looked so clean and crisp and perfect and it lasted for about 6 hours. The next day it was all back, but maybe more. We actually cut our crepe myrtle trees early so all those leaves don't fall EVERYWHERE! It's so frustrating, isn't it. FALL ALREADY!!! Maybe that's why I'm such a Christmas grinch! Ha Ha Ha! Love your little tree.

    1. I know what you mean about the leaves. Our yard, front and back, is full of pecan trees, and the neighbor has a huge oak tree close to our adjoining fence. A few days ago, my daughter spent hours blowing leaves and getting the yard looking perfect. We got a hard rain that night, and wet leaves were plastered several inches deep the next morning on everything...the ground, the cars, the lawn furniture. As soon as they dried out, my SIL had to do the job all over again. By the weekend, we'll need to do it again. It's definitely Grinch-making! :)

  3. I like your deco. It is such that kind of bling bling, I like most.
The best comment is that of your grandson#1!!
Wish you a nice festive season and enjoy the time with your family.

    1. The other eleven months of the year, I'm not much of a bling bling person, but during December, the shinier the better, especially now that I have grandsons. They love the color and lights so much. The inside of the main house has so many flashing lights that it looks like a disco. :)

  4. Oh, the Griswalds!!! So much fun! I'm looking forward to seeing your daughter and SIL's decorations. Yours look very festive and stylish so far, love that door! Over here, most people don't put up the tree before the evening of the 23rd, and we have our big Christmas dinner and get our presents the next evening. This year we won't have a tree. My pilot husband has a five day layover in NYC and we decided to go with him. So Christmas will be a bit different this time, and the boys are so excited!

    1. My mother's birthday was December 15, so putting up the tree was always part of her birthday celebration. Here in the U.S., people have started decorating earlier and earlier...sometimes before Thanksgiving, which drives me crazy. You'll have a great time in NYC for Christmas!

  5. Your front door looks awesome wearing its baubled wreath Dana. Is it made of vintage baubles? Love the grandie's 'grafitti'!
No decs up here yet. Anthony away for Christmas and eldest daughter overseas - just me and Belle this year...finding it difficult to get motivated....x

    1. You two should do something totally outrageous together and make it a crazy Christmas to remember.

My wreath is a cheapie I bought last week. I bought the miniature vintage style ornaments and tree from the same store last year.

  6. I love your tree Dana!! My nanna had a silver one very similar which I have fond memories of when I was little. Grandson # 1 did well with his contribution! Very cute. I'd like to go super Griswold with the decorating one year just for fun. We haven't put out outdoor lights up yet - hopefully this weekend. Even though its summer here now, and we were sweltering hot the other day, its already back to freezing cold here in Melbourne and my winter coat is on - madness!!

    1. My grandmother had a full-sized aluminum tree when I was a kid too. My SIL grew up with his dad doing full-blown Griswold Christmases, so I have a feeling we'll have that too as the boys get older. Our weather is crazy too. It was 80 degrees yesterday...27 tonight. (27 C/-3 C)
