The Kent-Coffey collections of the 1950s and 1960s were solidly built and priced so the average consumer could afford them, resulting in their being very popular. The brand is experiencing a new surge of interest, as young MCM afficionados are beginning to become familiar with the name and add Kent-Coffey pieces to their growing collections.
Court records indicate that the Singer Company furniture division acquired the company in 1983. However, Singer's aggressive attempt to diversify broadly proved financially unsound, and the furniture division fairly soon went bankrupt.

@1950sarh: Yes, I was just thinking the same thing this morning. I wish all companies would mark their pieces that permanently. So many tags have come off over the decades or have been lost to reupholstering. It would make identification so much easier if all pieces had an indelible mark.

ReplyDeleteSince Kent-Coffey started in 1907, your piece could easily be that old. I'd suggest contacting antique dealers in your area to see if they want to buy the piece outright or take it on consignment.

The set is white and moonstone (blue) and consists of the nine drawer dresser with mirror, tall chest of drawers with the drop-down writing table, a nightstand, the vanity and the double bed head and foot boards - AND the original brochure from the furniture store! The brochure touts the Impressa's smaller size, making it easier to fit into the smaller houses.

Deletei am the original owner of a KC Impressa bedroom set consisting of double bed , dresser, desk and night stand. it is antique white w/ gold trim. It was purchased new for me when i was 16 from the KC showroom at the LA Mart, in 1965. It was considered to be "Italian Provincial" in style as opposed to all of the french provincial that was usually purchased for teenage girls. The son said this was his parents bedroom set and it was purchasd in the 1940s. The back of the headboard has a Kent Coffey label "The Camellian". I have a double bed (headboard, footboard, side rails, & slats), 1 nightstand, vanity w/ stool and mirror, and 6 drawer dresser. The owner called it "blonde mahogany" (?). I am moving and need to sell the set. Trying to get some additional information about it to pass along. Its a neat look set with great lines. I appreciate any feedback, ideas, or suggestions. DeleteI bought the Townhouse set at an auction for 150.00! It has the full size bed, two nightstands, long dresser, and a 6 drawer chest of drawers. They all have glass tops I am not sure if they were bought that way original. I love the furniture.

Now I am trying to get the rest of the bedroom set. I found the tall chest and am purchasing it. I am having trouble finding a queen-size complete bed. They are Dauphine / "Kent Koffey" Dresser with 9 drawers & mirror, chest of drawers 5 drawer with middle drawer split in the middle with a center divider and then the side bed table all finished hard maple with Fruit-wood finish, Dove tailed with Honduras Mahogany drawer bottoms...( what a waist of such a beautiful wood) any way in that you know of this Master- Craftsman, I was / am hoping that you as well would know what they are worth so I can insure them properly!!! michael.mutschler@yahoo.com P.S. Mike, our store is in the Dallas, Texas, and we specialize in modern design, so I really wouldn't have a guess about the value of a French Provencial style set like the Dauphine. Your best bet would probably be to check local antique malls, Craigslist or eBay. Value varies a great deal from one area to another, so even if I knew what the pieces might be worth in the Dallas, area, that wouldn't necessarily be the value where you live. Also, your insurance agent might be able to help.
DeleteI've seen a few pieces of Dauphine on eBay in the white painted version, but a search of sold listings turned up nothing, so the pieces must not be getting any bids. You might be able to use eBay prices as a guideline, however.

DeleteI picked up a set of Kent Coffey last weekend for $40 at an estate sale, I was so happy! It consisted of one long dresser, a highboy and 2 night stands. I have a question about the long dresser though.. its the Tableau line. The long dresser has 2 doors in the middle and when you open the doors there were drawers. and there are 3 drawers on each side of the doors. I have not able to find on like that on the internet.. can anyone tell me why? thanks!

DeleteI have a complete bedroom set that my mom purchased when she was 21 (approximately 1953). The stamp in each of the pieces is wore at the same spot like the stamp wasn't made correctly. I haven't been able to identify which line it is from I have the bed, night stand, tall dresser, and makeup vanity w/bench. I'd like to be able to identify it. ReplyDeleteI don't know a great deal about the Impact series, except that I think it's an attractive style. I just looked to see if I could find any of that series on 1stdibs. While the prices on that site may not reflect what the average person could expect to sell a similar piece for, the site is a fairly good place to find out what's considered collectible and valuable. I mainly saw the Kent-Coffey Sequence line. If you are going to use the piece for yourself, you might consider professional restoration for aesthetic reasons, but if you're looking to add to resale value, I doubt that restoration would significantly increase the value of your dresser.

DeleteHi! I just realized that my nightstand is marked Kent Coffey Verona inside the drawer. I was getting ready to paint it, I bought it at Goodwill and it is painted in a gold underlay with a white crackle paint finish over that. Not sure if that's the original finish or if they painted it? Will it hurt the value if I paint over it?
ReplyDeleteNormally I'd warn against painting a vintage piece unless it's in such bad condition that it's impractical to try to salvage it (such as a piece that's been in a fire), since collectible pieces are more valuable when they're as close to original condition as possible. I'm not familiar with the Verona line, and since it's not a highly collectible series like Perspecta, and since it is already a gold and white painted piece, painting it probably won't affect its value.

ReplyDeleteI really don't know much about that collection. I looked for photos of it and couldn't find any. Since that's the case, I doubt it is very popular, thus meaning it's not very valuable in terms of resale. If you're buying for yourself and love it, that's all that matters, but if you're thinking about flipping it, your money might be better spent on something else.

ReplyDeleteHas anyone ever heard of the bedroom set by Kent Coffey called "The Guilford?" I can not find any reference to it on the web in order to get a feel for what it may be worth, if anything. My husband and I are looking to buy something more modern for our bedroom and would like to sell it. I have the long dresser with mirror, a tall dresser and two end tables. They are mahogany and have a serpentine front. It looks more Victorian that mid-century modern. Also, does the stamp on the back refer to the year it was manufactured? All four pieces have the number "73" which I assume is 1973. Any help you can provide would be appreciated!

I was kinda thinking the same thing about the name. Aside from the obvious sexual connotation, it also makes me think of Erector Set toys, neither of which seems conducive to selling furniture. I'd guess that those missing parts would significantly lower the value, because essentially anyone who bought it would have to buy another one for parts. I'd probably list it on CL for $75-150.

DeleteI don't believe Kent Coffey made Dining furniture, only bedroom. Harold Coffey's salesman, Roger Triplett started Blowing Rock Chair/Furniture Company specializing in dining furniture & casegoods. Their marks were under the chairs & a paper tag on the back of the casegoods. Kent Coffey Perspecta & The Eloquence lines are identical to dining credenzas & china hutches made in the mid-50s by Blowing Rock. It is a mystery I'm trying to unravel. I have the The Eloquence dining buffet & china ... but it isn't called The Eloquence, it isn't called anything. And we got rid of the chairs before we knew!

ReplyDeleteI think your best bet may be to get an app that searches Craigslist around the country for any sale of Charmant pieces and see if the seller would be willing to replace his hardware and sell you the original pulls. I'm sure those pulls have been out of production so long that finding out who originally made them wouldn't help you much.

ReplyDeleteKent-Coffey produced a huge number of collections, and I am only familiar with the most mid-century styles, the big seller of which is Perspecta. I will go out on a limb and say that most of the Kent-Coffey collections don't bring big prices. Most are worth about what you'd expect for used furniture. You sometimes see sellers put a big price tags on their pieces, but if you follow up, you rarely see them sell. Maybe a reader can offer some additional information about yours.

The paint has yellowed a bit but it looks like it was originally painted a creamy color and the hardware looks original as well. It has gold metal trim that coordinates with the handle hardware. Any ideas as to the value? I've spent a lot of time online looking for similar pictures with no results. There isn't even information about The Aberdeen. ReplyDeleteGenerally, if you can't find photos of Kent-Coffey pieces online, it means that they're part of a series that has largely been forgotten and isn't worth much. The company made countless lines of furniture, and only a very few...primarily Perspecta...have any resale value. That said, many Kent-Coffey pieces are attractive, so if you're going to use the dresser for yourself and like it, that's all that matters.
DeleteI have a set of this exact set, the Townhouse. There are 2 dressers, high and low, with a mirror, and a headboard. However, there are no markings anywhere that I can find. I am not planning on selling it, but could this be a knock-off? It is vintage, from the 60's and every detail is exactly the same.

ReplyDeletePrices of vintage furniture vary tremendously from one part of the country to another. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, just about the only Kent-Coffey style that commands a high price is Perspecta, but that may not be true in other locations, which makes it very difficult to suggest a value. We've had a few pieces of blonde furniture in the store over the years, and they didn't sell well at all, in spite of their popularity in the 1950s.

ReplyDeleteGenerally speaking, the reason you can't find much about any particular line is that it wasn't a best-seller at the time, didn't stay in production very long, or isn't very popular now. If I'm not mistaken, The Nocturne had an Asian influence, so it doesn't have a broad appeal today like more classic mid-century styles, such as Perspecta.

ReplyDeleteI Googled Carriage Trade pieces, and it looks as if they may not be very valuable. I saw a dresser listed for $135, a chest of drawers that has sold at auction for $51 and another chest that sold for $150. That doesn't sound too promising, since the bed and night stand would go for considerably less. Carriage Trade is more traditional/Early American, and that style isn't bringing as much as mid-century modern at this time.

DeleteHi Dana, I inherited a walnut dining room set, table and 6 chairs and a credenza with hutch from my aunt who had it at least 50 years. I can not find any of the typical Kent Coffey markings although it looks exactly like the pictures I found on 1stdibs. Is this a knock-off? Is it possible that a reproduction exist that is that old?

ReplyDeleteIn clearing out my mother's home I have just realized that my father's writing desk, which I remember from childhood in the 60's ( so I'm not sure how old this piece might be - most likely 50's), is a Kent Coffey. I did not know this was collectible - I just always liked it. It's in great condition, but needs to be cleaned, which I have started doing with Murphy's Oil soap, and then a finish will need to be applied. It appears to be walnut, and I am assuming that there was some sort of oil finish on it. It is from the "Casualaire" line. I would love some advice as to the correct type of oil to use on it. Also, if anyone has any information about this particular line - which time frame was it made in - I would appreciate that too. Looking forward to giving this writing or office desk ( it is totally finished on the back also) a new life, and I will place my father's 1960's Zippo desk lighter on it. It will then be just as I remember it as a child! Advice please!

ReplyDeleteI have my parents' bedroom set in near mint condition but am having a great deal of trouble really confirming it is Kent Coffey Perspecta. There is no mark I have found yet and the "hourglass" designs are all right side up, as opposed to on their side. The legs are a bit different and "9/65 1035" is stenciled on the back of one dresser and "8/65 1032" is on a bed rail. The differences do not match the Broyhill Brasilla line either. Is there another manufacturer it could be? I have a tall dresser, long dresser with mirror and bed frame with headboard and footboard. It is a gorgeous set.

ReplyDeleteI have a Kent Coffey dresser with mirror (the Lotus) and a desk (The tradewinds). Both are ebonized and have matching hardware. My grandmother bought them in the late 1950s to furnish a 1 bedroom apt. They do not go well in my home and I am looking to sell them. I've seen the same dresser (without the mirror) on the internet for $2000+. Are such prices realistic? Advice on how to sell would be appreciated. I am in northern Calif. Thank you.

ReplyDeleteI found a single bed stand at my mother in law's house when cleaning it up. It's Kent Coffey The Monet. Could this be a rare design? I've casually looked for a while and have never seen this style name come up. Mostly I want to know what kind of wood it is, is it veneer or solid, and how much you all think it might be worth. It's in excellent condition, a little bit of fading on the bottom shelf, and the chrome handle has lost a little bit of the shine from use, otherwise looks great.

I have a Kent Coffey bedroom suite called The Kentworth. It belonged to my great Aunt, and she owned it before I was born in 1963, so it was purchased before then. I am having trouble finding any information on this line. Do you have any info on the Kentworth, or where I can get info.

ReplyDeleteI've just found this site - I am responding to the October 23, 2014 at 8:31 PM posts about the Erect-On set. I have 3 pieces; 2 three drawer dressers and a 3 door cabinet which my father used as his writing desk/office in the 50's. Unfortunately, 2 of the 3 pieces went through a shallow flood in the basement. The bottoms weren't hurt too badly but we did have to remove the wooden block feet (the bits are around somewhere). If the marketing people weren't being funny, the Erect-On may refer to the fact that the pieces can be stacked. Also, I don't know if it was standard, but each piece originally had a beautiful milk glass top.
