New take on an old design...Canadian style

Yesterday's post was about a new take on an old Danish design. Today's post looks at a new twist on an old Canadian design.

Gus*Modern has recently announced the return of a classic mid-century chair. The Spanner Lounge Chair with Arms was originally created in 1950 by Russell Spanner but has been out of production for over fifty years. Gus* collaborated with the Spanner family to give new life to this iconic chair, staying true to the original design in every way.

The seat is woven strapping, and the frame is solid birch with exposed bolts and finger-joint details. Like the original, the new Gus* version will be manufactured in Toronto and will be available in a variety of colors and finishes.

The first 100 chairs produced will be part of a signed and numbered limited edition.

Gus*Modern has come out with a new home office line which includes some great desks. They show them paired with the new version of the Thompson chair, this time with no upholstery. If I had room for it, that Finch desk would be mine.

Bringing in the new

My SIL is constantly searching for great new modern furniture to sell in the store, in addition to the phenomenal vintage modern pieces he finds. We help customers create unique living spaces by mixing old and new, and we practice what we preach, as our homes are decorated that way as well.

We have most recently become a dealer for Eastvold Furniture. This is how designer Matt Eastvold describes the company:

Eastvold Furniture is a small Minnesota-based company that designs and builds finely crafted furniture. The pieces built in our small rural shop end up scattered all over the country and will (we hope) be passed down to future generations. One of our highest priorities is to use quality, sustainable materials. Our furniture is designed to stand the test of time, and we believe that the creation of each piece should benefit both our community and our planet.

Gus* Modern has introduced beds into its line of beautiful modern furniture. The Gardiner comes in an off-white tweed piped in dark charcoal and a gray wool piped in dark charcoal. The Carmichael borrows its design from the Gus* sofa and chair of the same name and comes in a light gray tweed or a dark charcoal tweed.

Hop on the Gus Bus

When we started carrying Gus* Modern furniture back in March, I posted about some of my favorite pieces. Sales have really taken off, so today...after apologizing to Paul Simon for having a little fun with his lyrics...I thought I'd show you some of our best-selling seating, along with a few new pieces that I think will inspire others to come on board as Gus* fans.

While the line is certainly mid-century inspired, the company produces no knock-offs. Gus* furniture and accessories are perfectly at home with vintage pieces, but they maintain their own identity as good modern design. And did I mention that they're exceptionally well-made?

One of the hardest things to find is a good-looking glider rocker for a baby's room. I know, because I looked everywhere when Grandson #1 was on the way. We were so excited when we found that Gus* has just the thing for parents who don't want a traditional rocker sitting in the middle of their modern nursery.

In case you missed yesterday's post, I stepped out of blogger mode long enough to become a Gus* customer myself. I am the proud owner of a new Rochelle sofa, which you'll see soon when I post new photos of my redecorated living room.

More Gus

A couple of Gus*Modern pieces were backordered when we got our initial shipment, so I want to share two more chairs with you. I think you'll like them very much.

This is the GT Rocker. It has a steel base and cushions inspired by vintage auto upholstery. The GT Rocker is available in three fabric choices.

This is the Delano chair. It has a stainless steel frame and blind-tufted cushions. It can be upholstered in fabric or leather.

I fell in love with the orange GT Rocker the first time I saw a photograph of it. Now that I've seen it in person, I'm even more enamoured of it.  This is one Gus piece I definitely plan to buy for myself soon.

I'll be busy the next few days doing a big project for the school district, so my posts will probably be fairly short. In the meantime, I'll be sharing photos of some of the new pieces in the store without much commentary. I'll be back to my usual chatty self as soon as possible, I promise. :)

In the store: A little old, a little new, a lot fabulous

For the past couple of months, we've been clearing out all our merchandise at the old location and stocking the new store. My SIL has made some stellar purchases, and Hank Tosh and Rene Martinez deserve a huge round of applause for the incredible restoration work they've done on a steady stream of pieces.

I could talk about all the new things for paragraphs on end, but I think I will let them speak for themselves.
