In the store: Case goods and seating

As usual, my SIL has scored some exceptional pieces for the store. He dropped a long credenza and a large Danish wall unit off to be refinished, but here are the pieces he's put on the floor.

First, the 401 highback wing chair by Alvar Aalto finally arrived. It still has its original raffia upholstery and wooden buttons, and it's amazingly beautiful. We've been eagerly waiting for this piece, and it didn't disappoint.

He also got a beautiful daybed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen, which is a beautiful blue with a lovely frame.

This rosewood sideboard is massive. Look at the way it dwarfs the Sarpaneva Festivo candleholders on top of it!

I think this Italian bookcase is an exciting piece too. I love the glass doors and splayed legs. It's attributed to Osvaldo Borsani.

    1. My SIL couldn't be at the store to take delivery of the chair, so he had it delivered to the house. For a few hours, I actually had it sitting in my living room. You have no idea how hard it was to let it go!

  6. Don't know how you resist buying them, at least you see them in person.

    1. Sometimes seeing them in person makes it harder to let them go.

  7. I'm a huge fan of Aalto and this chair has me swooning! Love the bentwood legs/frame. Such lovely finds. I always say that I would love to have a shop and find/sell stuff but with all the great pieces you guys find I'm afraid I'd want to keep them ALL. Not very good for business. HA HA! Gorgeous eye candy, Dana.

    1. Unlike me, my SIL refuses to allow himself to get attached to pieces. From the very beginning, he has told me, "We're in business to sell furniture, not decorate our houses." Still, I've wangled several good things out of the store. LOL

  9. Believe it or not, the Italian bookcase is the one for me. I have just the spot. How do you resist...? It is like in Breaking Bad and the meth addict is making the drugs. Yea, I know too much time with the DVD. Hey, is SIL and daughter going to Palm Springs and maybe I can say hi at the show or something... Let me know how we can chit chat. I have nothing but tremendous respect for SIL and what the 3 of you accomplish in your little corner of Mid2Mod.

    1. haha We're big Breaking Bad fans too! No Palm Springs trip is in the offing for my SIL and daughter this year, but I'm sure we'll meet up with you there one of these days!

  10. Ah, I grew up in a Danish/Swedish household, and our home was filled with an eclectic mixture of 200-year-old Danish pieces and mid-century modern teak Danish pieces (real teak). It's been fun to see the Renaissance of mid-century modern furniture again!

  11. I especially love the rosewood sideboard. I love a sideboard more than anything, bar Alvar Aalto. He's a Finnish icon. Our Finnish au pair knew nothing about design (eg never heard of Marimekko!!), but she knew all about Mr Aalto because he's so important to Finland. What a genius he was.
