In the store: Finn Juhl wall unit

Finn Juhl designed this Cresco wall unit for France & Son, and it is magnificent. You can let your imagination run wild and arrange it in any configuration you like, because every piece of this beauty is completely modular. It is made of teak that's in excellent original condition, and it's truly one of the most beautiful and practical wall units we've ever had in the store. Drawers, doors, shelves...who could ask for more?

In the store: Poul Cadovius sofa

The latest knockout piece to make its way to the store is this sofa by Poul Cadovius for France & Son. It's a newly refinished woven teak case sofa with brand new nubby orange upholstery, and it is going to knock your socks off.

My SIL has just set up a space for taking photos in what was formerly a storage room at the back of the store. I'm loving the new look of his images. Good job, Joe!

In the store: Finn Juhl coffee table

My SIL found this beautiful Finn Juhl coffee table on a buying trip out of state not long ago. Much to our dismay, it was damaged on the trip home, despite very careful blanketing and tying. We were heartsick, doubting that it could be repaired. All was not lost, however, because Hank Tosh of Toshmahal made it look showroom-new again. The piece is part of the 500 Series designed by Juhl in 1958 for France & Søn.

France & Søn, one of Denmark's finest furniture manufacturers, was originally called France & Daverkosen. The company name was changed to France & Søn when Julian France joined the business. The company was sold to Poul Cadovius in 1964, and its name was changed to CADO Møbelfabrik. Finn Juhl designed for all three incarnations of the company.

Ole Wanscher

Ole Wanscher (1903-1985) was born in Denmark. He studied with Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and worked with him for three years following the completion of his studies. In 1927 he set up his own office, specializing in furniture design.

Like his mentor Klint, he was influenced by classical furnishings, particularly 18th century English furniture, as well as designs from Egypt, China and Greece. One of his most famous designs is the delicate Egyptian stool.

Upon the death of Kaare Klint in 1955, Wanscher took over his position at the Royal Academy, where he remained until 1973. While there, he used his vast knowledge of furniture history to write several books on the subject.

While many of Wanscher's most beautiful pieces were made with master cabinetmaker A. J. Iverson, he also had an interest in mass production. He had a successful relationship with P. Jeppesens Møbelfabrik A/S that began in the 1950s and lasted the rest of his professional career. He also designed pieces for France and Son.
