Back in the day: Feed a cold

I've been under the weather lately with a horrible cold/cough that everyone around here seems to have. It has made me think back to the limited remedies we had when I was a kid.

The first time we sneezed or coughed, out came the old mercury thermometer...to be held under your arm when you were a toddler and under your tongue when you were "a big girl." (My grandsons have something called a Fever Bug that looks like a cartoon caterpillar and sticks on their foreheads.)

Then at night the vaporizer would come out, and the smell of Vicks would hang in the warm damp air. Vicks VapoRub would also be applied generously to my chest.

I always knew that my mother would give me cherry cough drops...either Smith Brothers or Ludens. I loved those things so much that they almost made it worth being sick.

Of course, a trip to the doctor for a shot of penicillin was always an option. Why did the metal version look so much more menacing than today's plastic one?

If all else failed, however, my mother's potato soup was a general cure-all. She always made a big pot of it when I was sick and administered it with TLC.

Cool little Kevi

The Kevi chair celebrated its 50th birthday in 2008, at which time 2.5 million of them had been sold.

It was designed in 1958 by Danish twin brothers and architects Ib and Jørgen Rasmussen. In the chair's lifetime, it has received several design awards, including one for the Kevi wheel, which Jørgen Rasmussen designed in 1965. The Kevi chair finally gave the world the ideal solution for sitting comfortably while at the same time being able to move the chair easily in all directions.

The furniture manufacturer Engelbrechts celebrated the anniversary by launching an anniversary line called the 2050. Only 250 copies of that line were produced. The anniversary edition came with a certificate and was personally signed on the bottom by Jørgen Rasmussen.
My SIL recentely found this much older version, which will soon be available in the store. It's such a cool minimalist little chair, and I especially love the oval casters. They look like little shoes. (Remember the Johnny Depp lunch counter "bread dance" in Benny & Joon?) And the little white dots on the rosewood backrest are such a cool touch.  Although the upholstered seat is in good condition, I think there are some serious plans to make it ultra-fabulous.

Oh, by the way...Rebecca at Mid-Century Modern Remodel is having a drawing for a beautiful turquoise vase, and she wants your input on a new masthead for her blog. Drop by and spread the bloglove.
