The latest scoop

The chairs that have generated the most comments, both in the store and on the blog, are Carter Brothers scoop chairs. One of my first posts in September of 2010 was about my own chair. More recently it made an appearance in a post I did about a repro George Nelson clock.

For those of you who haven't followed the blog since its inception, Carter Brothers, Inc. of Salisbury, North Carolina, produced the two-cushion Model #200 scoop chair until sometime around 1958. After that, they made the one-cushion model. In the 1950s, the chairs sold for $19.95-24.95, depending on the upholstery.

We recently had an orange scoop chair in the store that sold so quickly it made our heads spin, and now we're excited about a high-backed yellow scoop chair and a low-backed avocado green one that we've just put on the floor.

  3. I notice that the high back yellow one has some subtle "sculpting" to the front edge and presumably the top headrest edge. It looks like a much more expensive chair instead of just a piece of bent plywood with some hardware store legs screwed on. What's the difference between that particular chair and the others?

  6. @Mick: Thanks! It's one of my prized pieces. It's had a long, hard life and is only for looks now, not for sitting, but it's plenty nice to look at.

  7. @Mr.Modtomic: I'd guess it was just a change in style from one year to another.

  8. @Carey Brown Strombotne: I read somewhere that you could buy a Corvette for about $3600 in 1958, so I guess it's all relative. ;)

  10. Love the way the upholstery appears to float above above the ply - a simple, yet effective design.

  11. @chairsmith: I had never noticed that before, but it actually does appear that way.

  12. Have you had one of these reupholstered? I just picked one up (for a $1 no less) but it'll probably need to be redone. I'm wondering how involved it is. Looks like the cushion might be glued on or something.

  13. @Vintage Hunter: I'm not sure how the cushions are attached, but I'll try to find out. It seems like the man who repaired my chair said it was stapled on, but I may be wrong.
