Look what followed me home.

I was minding my own business, and this Danish desk from the 1960s followed me home from the store yesterday. I hadn't really planned to buy a desk, even though this one really intrigued me when my SIL found it. Several customers looked at it seriously, and I found myself secretly relieved when they didn't buy.

It's made of teak and has brushed nickel trim and pulls, and the drawers seem to float underneath the top surface. That's enough to make this desk desirable, but the thing I really love is that the top slides left and right to reveal hidden storage on both sides of the desk.

I was lucky enough to get a great buy on a Herman Miller Aeron chair recently, so it seemed only fitting that I own a desk that is equally nice...and now I do.

Finished on both sides, so it can be free-standing

Three drawers and plenty of work space

Brushed nickel pulls and trim on "floating" drawers

Hidden storage underneath sliding top on both sides of desk

Oh, I almost forgot to show you a really sweet part of the desk. The drawer bottoms are turquoise Formica!

  1. Super cool desk. Do you know anything about it? I'm always interested in the details. That hidden storage is sleek too. Looks like you really found a gem.

  2. Wow, what a super find. Adding to the super-ness, a top that slides for 'secret' storage!

  4. Wow, beautiful desk Dana! I love the floating style and secret drawer. I don't blame you for letting it "follow" you home. The handles look like Brasilia.

  5. @Eric McGrew: It's not marked anywhere that I can find. I've started researching it, but I've only other example of it I've located is at City Issue in Atlanta, and they don't have a designer or manufacturer listed either. My best guess so far is that it another company was "inspired by" a sliding drop-leaf desk that Arne Vodder did for Sibast.

  6. @1950sarh, Rachael, DearHelenHartman and Sudha: Thanks! I'm kinda loving having a SIL with a mid-century store, even if I did have to stay up past midnight with him last night arranging the floor and making tags. :)

  7. @snail: Yep, Floraline it is. This piece has been in my kitchen, but I recruited it temporarily till a green and brown cylindrical Royal Haeger earth wrapped vase I found on eBay gets here. Then we'll see which one fills the empty spot in the kitchen. We have the same Royal Haeger vase in gold and brown in our store (my Sept 18 post), and I fell in love with it, but when I saw the green, I was even more smitten.

  8. @Rhan: I thought the same thing about the pulls. They're only 1 1/4" wide x 1 1/2" long...baby Brasilia. :)

  9. The plot thickens. I found a teak desk designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen for Seffle Mobelfabrik that has the same brushed nickel rods creating the "floating" drawers. Apparently another "inspiration" for the company that made my desk. Reminds me of what U2's Bono says about the "Identi-Kit" he used for creating his persona...a piece of this and a piece of that.

  11. @illuminate1: Are you the Illuminate of St. Louis estate sale fame? If so, I hear you've been finding some great things lately too. :)

  12. Love that desk! You always seem to pick up the coolest stuff. Those almost look like Brasilia handles on the drawers too.

  13. @Nick: I have to give my SIL 99.999% of the credit for the furniture finds. In the store's division of labor, he's the furniture guy, and I'm the smalls person. He buys from all over the country, and he's constantly on the lookout. Occasionally I'll stumble across a cool piece of furniture, but chances are, if you see something you like, he located it.

  14. Also, you might try speaking to The Foundry again. I was able to finagle a $10 credit out of them after all of the shipping issues.
