Architecturally significant: William Benson home in Dallas

In 1957 a team comprised of architect William Benson, interior designer Louise Wolff Kahn and landscape artist Richard Myrick came together to create a home that epitomizes the era and continues to delight and amaze.

Materials such as brick, African Korina wood, Italian glass tile and cork defined spaces and created a serene environment. Sliding glass doors allowed a view of the garden, courtyard or terrace from every room.

The home has 2,720 square feet, four carports, two bedrooms, a library, formal and informal rooms and high ceilings. It was built on a half-acre plot in the prestigious Preston Hollow neighborhood in Dallas, Texas, and now enjoys a canopy of tall, mature trees and perfectly placed ornamental trees.

This is truly one of the finest examples of mid-century architecture in Dallas. It was kept in pristine condition by its original owners until it was listed and sold in 2009 by Douglas Newby.

More than a hint

I've been hinting for a while that big things are about to happen for Mid2Mod. Really big. I've been waiting for my SIL to give me the go-ahead to make the announcement here on the blog, and today is the day.

We're moving to a new location! We've outgrown our 1100 square foot store in Exposition Park, so we're packing up and moving to a spot in Deep Ellum that's three times the size of our current store. For you locals, we will be taking the former Century Modern space on Main Street.

For you readers across the country and around the world, Deep Ellum is an arts and entertainment district in Dallas, Texas, that became well known in the early 20th century for hosting such blues and jazz artists as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter and Bessie Smith.  It is now home to  some of the coolest clubs, restaurants and stores in town...and soon to be home to us.

Incidentally, Dallas PinUp will be one of our neighbors on Main Street. The owner is photographer Shoshana Portnoy. She and my daughter became friends in elementary school. I will be doing a post very soon about her fabulous store (and her other exciting projects). Don't miss it!

Not all bunkhouses and barbed wire

I have a number of friends who have visited me over the years from other parts of the country, and almost all were surprised that Texas didn't fit the stereotype they had in their heads. Although we have our share of Western charm, we also have some breathtakingly beautiful architecture, including amazing mid-century homes.

I thought I'd treat you to a peek at a few of them  from Douglas Newby's site, which I think you will thoroughly enjoy. A section of his larger Architecturally Significant Homes site is devoted to modern and mid-century homes in the Dallas area, many of which are for sale. You might also enjoy Mid-Century Modern Homes on Facebook for more stunning photos of Texas homes.
