Bitossi big-heartedness

I had to come out of my "getting ready to list a house" hiatus to share an amazing story of generosity and graciousness that warmed my heart.

Last weekend I listed several free items on Craigslist, and a mid-century lover named Brad picked them up. During the course of our brief encounter, I learned that he and his wife are furnishing their "new"20th century ranch style home...and that they're expecting their third child next week.

It's been my experience that many people pick up free items with hardly a thank you, but Brad thanked me profusely and then emailed me a couple of days later to say that he wanted to drop off a gift to show how appreciative he and his wife were.

Today he was waiting for me when the boys and I got home from school. He had a beautiful gift bag, containing this gorgeous Bitossi lidded dish and matching ashtray.

I think I actually jumped up and down a little. Not only do I love Italian pottery, but those of you who have read my blog for any length of time know that I also collect vintage birds. Brad and his wife couldn't have chosen a more perfect gift for me.

I am so moved by their big-hearted gesture. There really are people in this world who repay a kindness with a kindness of their own, and I happen to think that this spirit is the rule rather than the exception in our community of mid-century collectors.

  1. Dana, how good to see you post! This is a heartwarming story. The gifts are spot on for you, and you know how appreciative they were by making this nice gesture. You are right about free. We have a Freecyle group in our area and some receivers of goods can't seem to manage the minimum thanks.

I've missed you. What is going on with your house? Are your daughter and SIL selling in another venue?

    Hope you are well! Pam

    1. Hey, Pam...good to see you too. I did Freecycle for a while, and my experience was the same as yours. It was so nice to meet someone who truly appreciated the vintage pieces and would give them a good home.

As for the store, it is no more. My soon-to-be-former SIL closed it after he and my daughter separated in August. She and the boys and I are doing fine, but we're going to downsize a bit. A photographer is coming out Monday to take photos for the listing, so we've been busy lately. I'll post the pictures when the listing goes online.

  3. I'm with Pam, it's good to see you post! I was starting to despair that you had given up blogging, so I feel much better to know that it's just a hiatus. Good luck with selling the house, can't wait to see where you end up!

  4. Hi Dana!
Your post made my day. There are still good people in the world, truly good and kind people! I'm so happy that you shared your story with us. Your gifts are beautiful and I know how much you'll treasure them knowing the circumstances in which you received them.
Come back soon and good luck with your prep for the sale of the house.
    xoxo, T.

    1. Tina, Brad's generosity astounded me. People don't give away beautiful Bitossi pieces like that every day. I will definitely treasure them for their beauty and for his thoughtfulness.

I'll be back soon with pictures of the house.
