I've found a modern one that I love. It's the Tannenboing, a reusable spiral brushed aluminum tree that comes with its own cable system for suspension from 8-9 foot high ceilings. (Extra cable can be purchased for higher ceilings.) The tree springs to over 6 feet in height, is 4 feet in diameter at the base and weighs 20 pounds. It can hold up to 200 ornaments, can be disassembled in about 15 minutes and can be stored flat in a 3" deep box.
The Tannenboing is the brain child of Michele E. Weingeist. When she came up with the idea, she consulted an industrial designer, a mechanical engineer and several metalsmiths. It took almost two years and 30 prototypes (which were recycled) to come up with the right design, but the result was a truly modern aluminum tree. It sells for $395, plus $100 shipping.
