Construction saga: A little cleaner and a lot closer to a house

Yesterday my back yard looked like an ant hill, with workers scurrying everywhere. Roofers, plumbers, electricians and framers were all here. The trash crew arrived and hauled away several more loads. I don't know how all those men kept from bumping into each other. I was so busy answering their questions that I never got anything posted, but it's just as well, because now I can tell you what was accomplished in the last couple of days.

The roof is finished. The bulk of the plumbing work is done, with the hot water heater to be installed today. Almost all the wiring is done, and the interior framing is complete. Next on the list is sealing and painting the exterior so it's watertight, and then the sheet rock will go up. Somewhere in there, the a/c guy will do his thing, and before I know it, I'll have a house.

Here's a peek at the vastly improved view from my kitchen window. The blue doors were inside my two-room workshop, and they've been propped in the front door opening to keep out rain. As a matter of fact, they're coming down as I type it, and the new door is being set today. The glass man is coming Monday to measure. Before long, my front doorway will be gleaming in all its orange and satin glass glory.

  2. So exciting! Any plans for your new front yard? How about a cool modern landscape design? Could you post a sketch?

    1. That's still in the planning stages. My "front yard" is a pie-shaped wedge that's about 15' long on both straight sides. I'm considering several things right now. One is to lay 16x16 concrete squares for a sidewalk and then fill in the "yard" and in between the squares with rock, planting a few drought resistant plants in the rock. I'm also considering having the whole area paved with flagstone, leaving a space in the middle for a firepit. Another option is to build a deck over the whole area.

    1. It's really shaping up. On your next trip to Fort Worth, you and Patricia will have to drop by for a visit and see it! I live so close to Bass Hall that you could almost throw a stick and hit me. Well, maybe not that close...but about 10 minutes away. :)

    1. I went out with the camera today to see if I could get any interior shots, and there were so many ladders and tools in there, not to mention the stacks of materials, that you couldn't really tell what was what.

I have a feeling, because it's so small, that it's going to be really difficult to photograph without the right kind of lens. I saw a listing on Craigslist for someone who does architectural photography for real estate listings for $75 a session, and I might hire him to take a few shots once I get moved in.

    2. Oh interesting idea on the photographer. I could use a few lessons so maybe I will check that out. Before I started our house project, I bought a new lens for our Canon Rebel. Wide angle. If you guys have a good camera that you use for the store shots, I highly recommend. I use this lens to death and it is great for taking inside pictures when I go on my famous home tours. :)

    1. Now that most of the mess from the demo and roofing has been cleaned up, and they're moving so quickly inside, I'm starting to see light at the end of the tunnel, and I'm getting really excited. I can't wait to show it to you when it's finished!

  7. Just popped back to 'the before' (before) post. Looking much better Dana. See, you survived the mess, you've got your door (or very nearly) - things are on the up and up!

    1. Yes, the door is now set, and the sidelights are framed. I'm hoping that by the end of next week, the house/door will be painted and the satin glass will be in the sidelights and windows. Things are looking up!

    1. Now that the interior is shaping up and I can actually see rooms developing, I'm really getting excited. I just asked my contractor if he could build in a very retro-looking set of shelves at the top of the partial wall between my living room and bedroom, and I'm having great fun planning it. :)

    1. Getting the door in really made it start to look like a house. We all did a walk-through of the interior yesterday, and in just 24 hours, it had started to take on the looks of a real house. It's going to be painted early next week, and I know that's going to be exciting.

    1. Some people might call my planning slightly obsessive-compulsive, and they might be right. I've made lists of my lists. :)

  11. DANA!! This is SO EXCITING!! I am so happy for you getting this little nest! And to be so close to your family! I loved your moodboard from a few posts ago and I cant wait to see what happens next! I know how you felt about the mess. I almost lost it when we moved in to the new place with the boxes. I COULD. NOT. deal after a month of mambo-ing around boxes! But it will get there and it will be home and you will breath a huge sigh of relief and you will appreciate every single nook and cranny of that home so much more knowing where it started! :) So happy for you!!!
