Joe and the Magnificent, Marvelous, Really Cool, Very Good Day

With heartfelt sympathy to Alexander who had a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (and thanks to Judith Viorst for a book many of us will forever remember with fondness), just the opposite is in store this weekend for vintage modern lovers. My SIL is having a warehouse sale Saturday from noon till 5:00 p.m. at 2656 Main Street in Dallas, and it promises to be a most excellent day for bargain-hunting modernists in DFW and surrounding areas. For those of you who are familiar with the Main Street location of Lula B's, the warehouse is across the street.

In order to cut down on the number of pieces my SIL will have to lift, load and haul to our new warehouse space, he's marking things down like you won't believe. For the most part, these are pieces that haven't been refinished or reupholstered yet, so they were already more affordable than items that have made their way to the store, but now prices have been drastically reduced. If you're not afraid to put on your grubbiest weekend wear and poke around in a dirty warehouse, you can find some great deals.

Here are a few examples of what's for sale (more photos on our Facebook page):

Danish settee - $75

Danish table and 5 chairs by Poul Cadovius - $295

Sectional sofa - $200

Green Danish sofa and two chair set - $200

Miscellaneous...PLUS McCobb desk and chair
The McCobb set belongs to a friend, and I don't know what he's asking for it.

Dunbar mahogany desk AND credenza - $750
(desk has leather top and brass inlay)

  1. Poo that you're so far away! I would LOVE to get my hands on the Danish settee, the colour is brilliant.

I say we can the spam!

    1. The settee really is great. I had it at my house for a while.

I don't know what it is with the spam the past week or so. Did you see my recent retro cook-off post? It seems that spam is with me, no matter what I do. :)

    1. Thanks! We're hoping there will be a good turnout with prices this low.

  3. That sale looks GREAT! With the spam, have you tried checking the box in the blogger permissions that lets you approve comments before they're posted? I ended up taking the word captcha thing off of Ranch Dressing because nobody could ever read those things - but just checked that I have to approve posts. I DO get a lot of Spam comments now (mostly about Ugg boots for some reason) but at least I can just do one huge batch delete of them and they never see the light of day.

    1. I've thought about doing that...but I wondered how annoying it would be to have to remember to go in and approve comments.

Has your number of spam comments spiked drastically in just the past week or so? I've gone over two years with virtually none, and I've had to delete dozens just over the past few days. Fortunately, Blogger has caught most of them before they were published.

  4. Looks like a fantastic sale. I always cry a little inside when your SIL is having a sale. Ha ha on on the spam joke. I have seen spam go up a bit in the last couple of weeks but nothing crazy. Blogger has caught my spam for the most part. I say spam means you are on the radar! :) Can I contribute a little bit of a pent up rant? WHY do bloggers put on the captcha thing? All the larger bloggers do not do this. Extra hoops are a comment discourager. Comments are the community element of a blog and we know who the primary comment community is. Honestly Dana, you do a great job with commenting and getting comments...you are kind of the example for me in the mid-century, retro space and I really appreciate your efforts. IMHO you just let the chips fall where they may and delete the annoying comments. Worst case is you do the approval thing. But, that being said, I am not in your shoes and don't know exactly what you mean by a lot or how annoying or inappropriate they are. Thank you for that. I feel better.

    1. I hate those captcha things too! Is it just me, or are they becoming harder and harder to read? Nothing annoys me more than to have to try several times before it's clear enough to read. At the same time, I guess I'm just egotistical enough to want to see my comment the minute I hit "Publish," because I hate the approval thing too. :)

Like you, I prefer commenting to be as unrestricted as possible. I've been blogging for over two years now, and till now I probably haven't received over a dozen incidents of spam. Then, all of a sudden, last week I started getting literally dozens and dozens every day, and it was really becoming a nuisance to keep up with. I'll probably keep these stricter permissions for a short time and then return to my old policy of "anybody and everybody."

I really appreciate your kind words. Writing a daily blog requires a lot of time and effort, but since I'm retired, those are commodities I possess. As long as my blog stays this size, I'll keep trying to interact with readers in as personal a way as possible. I like getting to know my readers, and I want them to know they'll get a response from me when they leave a comment. Spammers make the whole blogging experience so much less enjoyable. I'll do whatever I have to do to thwart them.

  5. I wished I lived closer and had more bucks in my pocket! Some sweet deals would be had for sure and I don't mind doing the rehabbing. When I started blogging a couple of years ago it was really small and sporadic and for the most part still is. I just don't have the time, so I pick and choose things I feel may be of interest. I still make posters jsut through the hoops to comment and still get unrelated stuff that will never be seen by my readers. Much as I hate it as well, I've found it saves junk on the blog.
