Test drive

In case you're curious about my banner change, we're taking our new blog/business logo out for a test drive.

If all goes as planned, we will be opening our mid-century store in March, and some variation of this image will be our window sign, our price tags, our business cards and our website banner. We've come up with several color combinations. One is just orange and white, which will probably be the graphics we use for the store window. I like the dark gray, orange and white for my blog, but I may take the gray down a notch, because on some computers, it may look like black.

You may see some fine tuning taking place in the days to come...but it's still me.

Business logo with tagline

  1. I love it!! Your tagline is great. It is very clever. I really like the design with the abstracted leafy/ferny bit.

Looks very dark grey on my monitor.

Strangely, I might be in Texas for a conference in May . . . if I am, can I come visit your store???

  3. @Tanya: Oh, that would be so much fun. What city will you be in? The location we're hoping for is in Dallas.

We're waiting to find out if the current tenant at the location we want signed his new lease this afternoon. If so, we plan to be moved in the first of March. If he couldn't get the owner to agree to some changes in the lease agreement, he may not move, and it will be back to searching for the perfect spot. Keep your fingers crossed.

  4. @monogirl: Thanks! We're pretty stoked. We'd better sign a lease soon. Our inventory, which has been stored in my workshop and Jenn and Joe's garage, is now creeping into our homes, so we need to start selling furniture tout de suite!

  6. I'm not sure which city - the conference is for my hubby's work & I would be a tag along. I'll chat with you when I know some more. He just told me texas and a light bulb went off ;)

I hope all goes well opening the store! I'm so excited for you . . . I can't think of a better person to run a mid-century store.

  7. WARNING - Devils Advocate.

I've been kicking around opening a "bricks and mortar" for quite a while now. I've definitely got the inventory and if I ever learn to ship and get a paypal account I'd probably do pretty good. My Mom and I could easily keep a shop stocked and open. And I understand the "want" of having a shop. But I've to this day been able to resist by employing a little logic. I've seen quite a few shops come and go here in St. Louis, one of which was opened by a very avid eBay seller who really knows their stuff. Seems like having a shop is just a way to spend money on a place to keep inventory but I've got a place to keep my stuff. I just can't see selling more stuff out of a shop than off craigslist, and craigslist is Free! I just can't see the advantage of a bricks and mortar. Can you convince me otherwise?

    Oh, the logo rocks!

  8. @Mr.M: Believe me, my daughter, son-in-law and I have had this conversation a million times. We tried a booth in an antique mall and have tried selling only on CL, and what we've come to realize is that we're trying to sell in Fort Worth when the real market is in Dallas, so we've decided to take it to them.

I have a friend who started selling mid-range mid-century furniture 3 years ago with $200 in his pocket, and today he has a quarter of a million dollar inventory and is moving into strictly high-end mid-century and a 7000 sf building. We hope to fill the vacuum he leaves when he steps up.

Of course, the real story will be told when you ask us the same questions 6 months or a year from now. As an added bonus, though, the space we're looking at is in a really cool area, and it has living quarters in the back of the shop. Jenn and Joe are considering selling their house and moving in there. The shop is several hundred dollars less per month than their house payment, so they'd actually be saving money.

While opening any kind of business is always a gamble, we feel this is something we have to try. Our safety net is that Jenn's going to keep her day job...and I will have my teacher retirement, no matter what, so we won't starve.
    :)

  13. How exciting...your own store! Your logo is amazing. It has great color and is eye catching. Location, location, location...if you build it, they will come. I do believe that lovers of mid 2 mod design will FIND a good store. I have driven through alleys and down gravel roads to find treasures. With your wealth of knowledge and obvious eye for design, I'm sure your store will be successful. Good luck on getting the space. Can't wait for updates, pics and Grand Opening. Buckets of Luck to all of you.

  14. @Krazy4Mod: I'm so glad you like the logo. My daughter is the webmaster/creative coordinator for a large school district by day and my SIL is a computer whiz too, so they designed several logos, and this was our favorite. We're really excited about the store and will keep you posted on our progress.
