More Marimekko

Friday on the way to the store, I made a detour by the Crate and Barrel outlet to see what bargains I could find on fabric. After all, what says spring and summer better than a bright, cheerful Marimekko print?

First stop was the remnant bin. A dig through that container is about as exciting a treasure hunt as you can go on for just a few pennies. Luck was with me, because the bin was full of pieces in several patterns that were large enough for pillows. I bought two pounds of remnants at 95 per pound. To give you an idea what $1.90 worth of remnants looks like...and what you can do with it...here's what I bought. I got enough fabric to make 11 pillows.

2 pounds of Marimekko remnants

Here's a better look at the variety of remnant patterns I was able to get for less than $2.00. While this is not an upholstery weight fabric, it ordinarily sells at Crate and Barrel for $32.00 a yard, and it's a perfect weight for summer throw pillows. Can you believe it?  Enough for 11 pillows for $1.90!!! That's an unbeatable deal.

Of course, I saw fabric on the bolt that I had to have too. It wasn't even a splurge, since the Crate and Barrel outlet sells Marimekko for $4.95 a yard.

We're still planning a huge Marimekko backdrop for one of our room vignettes before the summer is over. As soon as we set it up, I'll post pictures.

  1. Dag! I gotta get over to C&B and see if I too can score some pillow material! I love the patterns and MomModtomic can totally make pillows for me! You're so awesome Dana!

  2. Oh, PS...speaking of how awesome you are...you remember the kitty / doggy bowl I got at that estate sale a few weeks ago? The one you mentioned (in a comment on my blog) was supposed to have a lid with a bell. I called the estate sale company the next day and the proprietor was kind enough to procure the lid for me before shipping the remaining items off to the thrift store! I got the lid! Thanks to your valuable info.

    Thanks so much.

  3. @Mr.Modtomic: I'm so glad you got the lid to your bowl! That's fantastic. And, yeah...if you have a Crate and Barrel outlet store in town, check out that remnant bin. It's the best deal ever! From $32 a yard in the regular store to $4.95 at the outlet...now that's one heck of a clearance price!

  6. We just have a normal Crate and Barrel, dag nabbit, but I did just pick up a Marimekko table cloth at an estate sale; sadly, it has some stains but I hope they will come out.

  7. @Jenny: You're so welcome! I love passing along steals like this to my blogging friends.

  8. @Midcenturymadam: One of the pieces I got was large enough to make a big floor pillow, but the rest will make 14"-16" pillows. Even if you buy by the yard, it's still the best buy in town!

  9. @bopfish: If you were willing to gamble, you might be able to call one of the outlet stores and tell them the colors you want and see if they'd ship you some yardage. As cheap as it is, you could hardly go wrong. I hope the stain comes out of your estate sale find!

  11. I added a link to the list of Crate and Barrel outlets in the first paragraph of the post. I was surprised at how few there are. My information may turn out to be more of a tease than a help to some of you. Oooops...sorry!

  12. Oh how I wish we had a Crate and Barrel regular or outlet store. The closest one to me is 2.5 hours away :( I know you have 2 of the circular embroidery pillows on your sofa at home that I wanted so badly only to find they were no longer available when I went to order them :( Your fabric is just gorgeous. Please post pics when you make pillows.

  13. @Krazy4Mod: The pillows I have on my sofa are my all-time favorites. I tried to buy a second pair to stash till these wear out, but like you, I waited too long. :(

  14. Nice haul Dana! There was a C&B outlet here when I first moved to CT, but it closed. I wish it hadn't for the Marimekko deals one could score!
