At risk: Casa Gomis

Casa Gomis, a beautiful modernist house in northeastern Spain, was designed by architect Antonio Bonet Castellana. Bonet was commissioned by Ricardo Gomis Serdañons and Inés Bertrand Mata in 1949 and completed the final design in 1953. Construction began in 1957, and the Gomis family moved into the house in 1962.

The home is still owned by the Gomis Bertrand family, but it is threatened on two fronts. First, it sits between the Barcelona airport and the Mediterranean Sea. In the 1950s, the airport was very small, but today it has expanded until it is now only slightly more than 400 yards from the home. Also, the house was built by artisans, and today there are very few craftsmen who have the skills to make necessary repairs. The family needs support in communicating with the airport authorities, as well as the municipality.

If you are interested in exploring what can be done to save Casa Gomis, you can email Marita Gomis Bertrand, whose parents were the original owners of the home.

  1. What a beautiful home; it would be a pity if it weren't kept up.

    1. Or even worse if the airport found a way to annex the property and raze the house.

  2. Oh boy, it looks like a beautiful jewellry box! What a shame that houses like this one can suddenly find themselves in such peril. I guess a big project like an airport extension will probably win over this poor little gem. Oh, what a shame.

    1. It's amazing...and a little frightening...how much cities can spread in just a few decades.

  3. Although not a perfect solution, the technology exists to safely move the house. The Airport Authority should pay for the move, for a new equivalent parcel of land, for the restoration of the house once it is moved, and for the loss of any value to the house because of the move. The family's legal fees should also be paid by the Airport Authority. Unfortunately, although the nuisance (the airport) was brought to the family, there is little that can be done to stop the noise from the airport, and the airport's further expansion. The family should seek counsel ASAP so that this beautiful home may be saved.
