Evelyn Ackerman (1924-2012)

Evelyn Ackerman
Evelyn Ackerman, known for her work in mosaics, tapestries and wood carvings, as well as for her collaboration for more than sixty years with her husband Jerome Ackerman, has died at age 88.

She was born in Detroit, Michigan, but moved with her husband to the west coast and became part of the movement called California Modernism. She had the ability not only to work across different materials but also to work in vastly different scales, from enameled miniatures to large architectural mosaics.

In recent years, she became an expert on antique dolls and dollhouses and wrote five books on the subject, even making patterns for doll clothing.

In addition to her innate sense of color and line, she brought whimsy and playfulness to her work, making her pieces beloved by many. The world of mid-century design has truly lost another icon.

    1. You live in an area where you might actually have a good chance of running across one of her pieces at an estate sale some day. I'm afraid my chances are a little slimmer. :(

  5. I am so glad you wrote about Evelyn Ackerman too. As a mosaic artist, I treasure every bit of history of modern mosaicists, and especially someone who had great color sense!
