Curious objects

Tamsin van Essen is a British ceramic designer who lives and works in London. She is a graduate of Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art.

She specializes in conceptual design and has been using the medium of ceramics to explore scientific and medical themes. She has been experimenting with the material qualities of ceramics, seeking to find out how unusual additions can alter the end product.

Her works lie somewhere between art and design and are one-offs. They are generally bought as conversation pieces.

    1. Her biological inspirations are very interesting...and, I'm sure, a little unsettling to some. The first piece was inspired by acne and the second by osteoporosis. There are others inspired by cancer cells, psoriasis, scars and syphilis. The biological erosion series was inspired by a parasitic virus eating away at the host. Who would have thought you could find beauty in some of these phenomena?

    3. It's fascinating to look at some of the entire series and see the process, such as metamorphosis or the biological erosion, from beginning to end.
