Børge Mogensen

Børge Mogensen
Børge Mogensen (1914-1972) was born in Aalborg, Denmark. He attended the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts. His mentor there was Kaare Klint, whose simple and functional furniture he admired. He later worked as Klint's teaching assistant at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

He apprenticed as a cabinetmaker under Klint during his time at the Royal Academy and became head of design at the Danish co-op FDB in 1942 after receiving his degree in architecture. He opened his own design office in 1950.

Under Klint he developed an appreciation for American Shaker furniture, which they both admired for its utilitarian design. Much of Mogensen's work was based on Shaker prototypes, and he became known for interpreting traditional forms into modernist designs.

Some of Mogensen's best known designs are the 1945 Spokeback sofa, 1950 Hunting chair and the 1959 Spanish chair.

    1. I think I could nap in that Sleigh chair, and I'd love to have that orange leather sofa! I think the height of that chest makes is a standout.

  2. Having myself a little cry right now. Missed out on a runner chair and ottoman that was on craigslist for $50 (obviously not listed as Mogensen). I just wasn't quick enough....sigh

    1. Oh, I think I'd be having a HUGE cry if I missed out on a steal like that. It amazes me that people have goldmines sitting in their living rooms and practically give them away on CL. We found an Alvar Aalto Paimio chair for $40, but by the time my son-in-law went to get it, the dealer had received so many calls that she reneged on the deal and demanded substantially more. Win some, lose some...but it still hurts.

    2. I guess I can't cry too much. I've found so many amazing deals and FREE items that it more than makes up for it, but this loss teaches me to NEVER doubt my instincts when it comes to mid mod.

    3. I shouldn't complain either. We get great deals all the time too, but it seems we still grieve a little for the designer pieces that get away.

  3. The sleigh chair is so strange yet so beautiful.

    1. Yes, I agree. It's like a softer, supplicatory version of Wegner's Papa Bear. Strange, but very beautiful to me too.
