Credenza crazy

For a while it looked as if our credenza supply had dried up, but lately my SIL has found some that are simply incredible. If you missed the George Nelson EOG, you really should check it out.

This week we've added a beautiful Danish credenza in rosewood with a dropfront bar, as well as a lovely Dyrlund with sliding doors. (Strictly speaking, it should probably be called a sideboard, since it has lined drawers, but the sliding doors make it perfect for a media cabinet.) I think you'll like both of them.

  1. That's stunning. They're all stunning, and put my poor excuse for a sideboard to shame.

What's the difference between a sideboard and a credenza? Is there a difference?

    1. As I understand it, if the piece has legs and was designed to be used in the dining room to serve food, it would be considered a sideboard or a buffet. Very often these pieces have felt-lined or divided silverware storage. To add to the confusion, however, a food-serving piece without legs (plinth base) can be called a credenza. If the piece was designed for storage in another room or in an office, it's generally called a credenza.

To be honest, the words have been used interchangeably for so long now that it's probably doesn't make a bit of difference. Since most of our customers are using the pieces as TV stands now, whether they have silverware drawers or not, that further blurs the distinction, so we usually just call them all credenzas, even though that may not be technically correct.

    2. Thank you for that explanation, Dana. I'm going to be old-school and use the two words as you have described them. It makes sense really. I'd so love to come and see your SIL's shop. Maybe one crazy day I will!

  2. Both are truly lovely but I like the staggered diagonal front on the draws, of the first one!:)

    1. Aren't those drawers killer? To me, that's what makes that piece so pretty. I also love anything with a dropfront.

Lots of people come in looking for sliding doors though. It makes a piece perfect for electronics, since you can leave a door open for use of a remote and for ventilation when the equipment is on.

    1. I think that's my favorite one too. It's got a lot of personality to go along with storage space.

  4. Hey Dana... I posted a credenza myself a few days ago. I am including link here for convenience because I would like your SIL's opinion-- new credenza is at towards bottom of post http://www.midcenturymodernremodel.com/2012/08/purging-pottery-barn-from-mid-century.html. What in the world is up with those leather handles? Has he or you ever seen anything like this-- it is Danish of some sort-- and do you have any thoughts? I am looking for yet one more credenza for our bedroom, kind of diminutive in size for foot of bed. If you guys ever get anything, let me know...

  6. Those are gorgeous! Your SIL finds the most amazing pieces. We keep thinking that we'd rather have a tall cabinet in our dining room so we have some actual display area (which we are sorely lacking). But I love the sleek look of the long buffets. I suppose that taking years to decide on just the right piece (like we did with our coffee table) isn't a such bad thing.

    1. He really does have a knack for finding great things. He just brought in several new pieces this week, in fact. Too bad you're not closer. He'd love to help you find just what you want.
