If any of you have $985,000 lying around and want to live in San Rafael, California, here's a new Eichler listing that might interest you. The house was built in 1961, has 2085 square feet, with four bedrooms and two bathrooms. It backs up to an open space and has a salt water pool. Inside it has a grand entryway with skylights, tile floors and updated kitchen and bathrooms.
I know some of you think that modernizing kitchens and bathrooms to this extent is a sacrilege, but as I've said before, I was alive when mid-century homes were new. I've paid my dues using a toothbrush to scrub white grout in pink bathrooms, hand-drying dishes every night because we didn't have a dishwasher and living with Formica that has been permanently stained with Kool-Aid. I love the mix of vintage and new, so I'm fine with modern conveniences as long as they're thoughtfully and tastefully done...and I think these are.

Yes, cracking open my piggy bank as I type. But you know Dana, an equivalent home like that would be more expensive here...think I might pack my bags and move to the US, if ever a windfall came my way!! xx
ReplyDeleteWhen you pack up, you might consider coming to Dallas, where our real estate prices are still considerably lower than California. A house of comparable design and more square footage can still be found here in the $500,000-650,000 range.

Some of the early ones did not have atriums as your earlier post noted. Looks like a small step down near the entry with skylights.

DeleteThat home is amazing, love the work they did! There are several on the market right now nearby. Think I've mentioned my husband grew up in this area in an Eichler (with 8 kids!). It's interesting to drive around and see some of the amazing remodels. Some have not been touched - or have been mangled with - and go on the market usually needing a lot of work. It must set your teeth on edge to see the mangled ones. The kitchen/dining room shots of the one you showed us almost brought tears to my eyes. That wallpaper! That light fixture! Yikes.
DeleteIf only I had that kind of money, I'd be moving in now. Haha! The entryway had me sold. The open layout benefited from the skylight and made the area look even bigger. And I love how it spotlights the huge artwork beneath it!
