Janine Abraham and Dirk Jan Rol

Janine Abraham and Dirk Jan Rol
French artist Janine Abraham (1929-2005) met Dutch-born Dirk Jan Rol (1929-) at the studio of Jacques Dumond in 1955, and they immediately "clicked," both personally and professionally.

By 1956 they had showed their collaborative work, and in 1957 they opened their own firm. Rol provided the structural and architectural know-how, while Abraham contributed imagination.

They realized the importance of mass produced modern furniture, but they were not willing to sacrifice solid workmanship. Their beautiful pieces incorporate a strong sense of line and space with a characteristic elegance.

Rol's later career placed more focus on architecture which integrated interior space and nature.

  1. They are stunning but they do make me a little anxious. It's true - I have a wicker phobia. It scares me. I'd get help but hubby is so happy there is ONE thing I'll never haul home, I hate to deal with it and burst his bubble.

    1. I'm a little leery of sitting on rattan with no cushion, but I'd take a couple of those plywood chairs in a heartbeat.

  2. Hey. I saw your message about your SIL maybe coming over to MO. If he does make it out near STL, just let me know and maybe we can meet up.

    1. I don't know what their itinerary is, but they're calling me from along the road, so if I find out they're going to be there, I'll definitely get in touch with you.

  3. The plywood for sure is my favorite. Yes, the wicker scares me a tad. Plus the cats would enjoy too much!

    1. I remember my mother's very chic friend had something similar to the Corolles chairs. Her house was soooooo quintessentially mid-century (and the color green I've painted my house, which is probably why I chose it). Even though I was only 6 or 7 at the time, I was aware that there was something really cool about her and her decor.
