Here is one of the original raffia-covered versions, which we have in our store. Except for a minor amount of wear to the front corners of the seat, this pieces is in amazingly good condition. Although I like the new colors on the Jongerius chairs, I can't help but have a special place in my heart for the uniqueness of this vintage piece's raffia upholstery.

This is a stroll down memory lane; my great-uncle Aleks and his wife Rose had a pair of very similar chairs in their parlour for years. Hmmm, wonder where they are now...
ReplyDeleteI think so often about things family members had in the 1950s and 1960s and wonder what happened to them and when they lost their value for their owners.
DeleteI like the updated version. I'd have a hard time deciding on a color.
ReplyDeleteThe color combinations are so fresh and pretty. I love Jongerius's work!
DeleteThey are great. Such style in the 1930's.. I think the IKEA Poang chairs may be a knock off of these.
ReplyDeleteI agree that they must have been the inspiration for the Poang chairs. This is one of those unfortunate times that the cheap version gives the original a bad name. I think it's hard for some people to see the beauty of the #401 chairs because they associate it with the IKEA design. Believe me, seeing the #401s in person changes that. They are so substantial and so beautifully made!
